Laundry Guidelines

We like to suggest a cold water rinse followed by a wash cycle on Hot (not Sanitize!) and a final rinse in cold water. Your choice of detergent will greatly impact the cleanliness and your love of your cloth diapers. Choosing a detergent that has not been recommended for cloth diapers can result in staining and residues (which inhibit absorbency, lead to stinky diapers and can cause skin sensitivities). When choosing a detergent, ensure that it is classed as "ZERO RESIDUE" and you want to select a detergent that does not contain any of the following additives:
•Fabric softeners
•Natural oils
•Perfumes
•Dyes
•UV brighteners
•Stain guard ingredients
•Enzymes
It is important to note that it is not how "natural" the detergent is, but rather the ingredients that can impact performance. We do not recommend the use of vinegar or baking soda as they can impact the performance of your diapers. If you are using a different brand of detergent, be sure to use a reduced amount (appx 1/3) of the recommended amount to limit reside which can hamper your diaper`s absorbency and may cause skin irritation. Most leaks are caused by residue buildup on diapers. We suggest stripping your diapers to remove any residue by performing a series of 4-5 washes in hot water (no detergent). Should you continue to experience issues, please contact us for additional support. Should you wish to use a different detergent, we recommend checking that it is suitable for use with cloth diapers via the Detergent Determinator created by the Real Diaper Association.

With all detergents and laundering products reactions and allergies are possible. If rash or reaction occurs, discontinue use.

As with all fabrics, the more gentle you are with your laundering, the more longevity the fibers will have. Our Fleece and PUL manufacturers suggest drying on low heat or tumble dry as this is the most gentle on the fabrics.

With our AIO`s the core is made of 100% cotton. Since this helps to regulate the temperature applied to the inner and outer layers of the diaper, these can typically be dried at a higher setting with minimal impact. However, always be sure to only damp dry your fabrics as an extended period at high heat with very dry fabrics will cause damage and significantly limit their life span. Never use fabric softener or bleach on your diapers! Monkey Doodlez® products without an inner cotton core such as wet bags, pail liners, and pocket diapers, should only be dried on low heat or hanged to dry.

Cotton Terry Inserts for pocket diapers and wipes should be laundered separately from diapers for their first wash as terry will give off lint for the first few washings. While it will not damage your diapers, the lint may cling to your diapers which is referred to as secondary pilling and will eventually wear away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why should I choose natural fibres over synthetic fibres?

A: Natural fibres such as organic cotton, hemp and bamboo are a great choice for diapers because they are highly absorbent, breathable and in the case of bamboo and hemp, naturally anti-bacterial. Natural fibres are less prone to hold odours and are less likely to lead to skin sensitivities and allergic reactions than synthetic fibres. Natural fibres are easily renewable and environmentally friendly to produce. Synthetic fibres such as polyester fleece and microfiber are made using chemical compound including crude oil and Ethylene glycol. Synthetic fibres tend to hold odours over time and because they are not breathable, they can lead to increasing scrotal temperatures comparable to those created by plastic disposable diapers.

Q: Are cloth diapers really healthier for my baby?

A: The short answer is yes, they are. The chemicals used in the manufacturing process of disposable diapers are linked to cancers, hormone changes and even respiratory issues. Babies using disposable diapers are more likely to experience diaper rash and typically take 6-12 months longer to potty train than cloth diapered babies. Studies have shown links between the use of disposable diapers and declining fertility rates in males. In addition, the environmental impact of the disposal of plastic diapers is almost beyond measure considering each diaper takes an estimated 500 years to break down in the landfill. Q: Will cloth diapers really save me money?

A: Your baby will go through approximately 6000 diapers from birth to potty training! With an investment in cloth diapers (which if properly cared for will last for more than one baby) can save you anywhere from $500 - $1000 for your first child and beyond!

Q: I have my diapers…now what?

A: The first thing you need to do before you start using your diapers is to give them a wash. We suggest washing on hot with a reduced amount of detergent (appx 1/3 of the recommended amount), and rinse in cold. Go ahead and machine dry on hot, but be sure to only damp dry as extended periods in a hot dryer with very dry fabrics will cause damage and shorten their life expectancy. As the inner absorbent core or pads are made of natural fibers, you will find that your diapers will need a minimum of 3-5 laundering cycles to reach maximum absorbency. This is because cotton has natural oils that need to be washed away in order for the fibers to fully absorb. See our Laundry Guidelines (LINK) for details on how to care for your diapers.

Q: Help…my diapers are leaking!

A: The most common reason that your Monkey Doodlez® diaper may leak is that there is oil hampering the absorbency. This may be in the form of oil residue either from detergents, creams or in the case of a new diaper, natural oils in the fibers that need to be laundered away.

To check to see if you have residue on your diaper, and if your diaper is repelling, pour a little bit of water on a clean, dry diaper. If the diaper is residue free, the water will absorb right in. If the water balls up and rolls around, this is because there is an oily coating on the fabric. Simply rub a little bit of dish detergent (we recommend DAWN) on the inner surface of the diaper and rub to a lather. Rinse and pop in the wash. This is extremely effective at ridding any oils from your diaper and will resolve your leaking problem due to residue. This also works extremely well for getting rid of odours, as those are typically trapped in the oils.

Monkey Doodlez® diapers typically measure larger size for size than other diapers, so be sure to check our sizing guide, and note that the weights are approximate only as all babies are different. If you find that there are gaps at the legs or waist, you may find that a smaller size is in order. Your baby may have also outgrown the absorbency of their diaper, and a doubler may be in order.

Doublers are simply extra absorbency pads that lay right inside the diaper, increasing the diaper's absorbency, or simply tuck in a second TAG pad. These are fantastic for naps, overnight or just added assurance if you have a very heavy wetter.

Q: Can I use Diaper Creams?

A: In most cases, diaper creams/salves have the potential to leave a residue on your diapers that can hinder absorbency. Even the most "natural" creams and salves can cause issues when used in excess. In most cases, cloth diapered babies experience far LESS diaper rash than babies exposed to disposable diapers and therefore, the need for diaper creams/salves is greatly reduced. There is no need to use a cream or salve on your baby at every diaper change - this is more a habit that we've gotten into because our mothers and grandmothers used them. Dry and Bare is best! However, if you do need to use a cream or salve, try to choose one that does not contain petroleum or zinc and opt to use a liner to prevent the transfer of the cream or salve to the diaper.
